Merry Christmas!

The day is again upon us when the whole Christiandom celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ who is God who came to earth to seek and save the lost.
Often the holiday season is lost in the rush of parties and gift hunting. Some buy things just for the sake of having something to give. Its the season of getting toys and new clothes for children.  Its nice to receive the gifts but often times, we don’t have use for it.  And very often, we are like children who after a few days of playing with the new toys, gets tired of it and start to look for something new.
Let’s not forget the reason for the season.  May the Christ of CHRISTmas find a home in your heart.
Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas.

Facebook

This past week I’ve been busy getting to know Facebook. I got introduced to Facebook sometime back but have not really given it much a second look.  I was still taking advantage of using Multiply.  But somehow Multiply is not exactly what I want.  I was trying to juggle between maintaining my blog with either Multiply, Yahoo 360 or this one.  I’ve finally decided to keep my blog with my own domain and use WordPress.
Why Facebook?  Well, we had a Grace Christian scouts reunion and we started an e-group using Google. Since e-groups has its limitations to just emails, it was brought up to use Multiply and another suggested to use Facebook.  Ross seconded that Facebook was better and so we’ve started a Facebook group and here I am learning more about it as I add more friends to my network.

Changing formats again

Some may wonder what’s the big idea of changing the website again?
I started my website since 1998 with static webpages and edit html files by hand.  After a while, it gets tedious adding links to the menu as I add articles so I started exploring automated menus.  I still have the partial working old site here.
After a while, I found out about content management systems and started using one called ezcontents and phpcms.  The program was nice but it had its short comings.
After searching for other options, I came to Mambo. We’ve made use Mambo for a number of our client’s projects which provided them with their own login access to allow them to update their sites.
I’ve also used Mambo and then migrated my site to Joomla.
Now, I’m trying to use WordPress for my blogging. WordPress uses tags instead of just putting articles into their categories allowing for a broader range of sorting and searching criterias.

Ubuntu on MSI Wind U100

Got myself an MSI U100 at the end of August. It came in with Windows XP home. It has a built-in recovery partition to allow one to restore the system in case anything happens to the installed software.

Not content with just having Windows XP and just the Home edition at that, I tried to reconfigure the default setup. The system originally comes with 2 partitions. The first containing the recovery system and the remaining for the installation of windows.

Previous to getting this, I was reading an article by James A. Eshelman, about setting up different partitions for different uses and data. I was already doing this with all my installs. A default windows installation and a second partition to contain the data. The purpose of this is that in case drive C was corrupted, I just easily format it and install my softwares from the original installers and not worry about the data.
James A. Eshelman took this further by specifying a separate swap partition, a separate temp directory, tweaking the system to make the default documents directory outside of the default c:\documents and settings\user... to make it easier to backup any data.

After putting in the different partitions, I ended up with 5 partitions for Windows and 1 for linux. Setting up the partitions was the easy part. Installing linux is the hard part primarily because the unit does not come with a cdrom drive.

I started with a number of articles and the basic instruction is to copy linux into a usb drive and install from it. After several attempts, I found the MSI wiki sitewhich mentioned a problem with the version of Ubuntu that I was using. A newer version 8.04-1 fixed the problem and I was finally able to get Ubuntu Linux installed on the unit.

The next problem now is how to get the wifi to work on Ubuntu. Apparently the mini wifi card that came with the unit is a realtively newer Realtek 1817.

Windows XP unable to boot

A Dell Inspirion 640m notebook suddenly shutdown and won't reboot. When system was restarted, the Windows logo will come up and then a blue screen with the following error comes on screen. STOP: c0000021a {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has shut down. There is no response on the keyboard and only a switch on the power can shut it down. Booting into Safe Mode or even Safe Mode command prompt does not work and will also go into that error.

After running the diagnostics that came with the Dell system and eliminating the suggestion possible cause of bad memory chips, I figured the problem is a corrupted file. Found the hint from this forum Boot the system from the cd installer and expanded the WINLOGON.EX_ file into C:\Windows directory. After rebooting, the system was able to fully boot into Windows.

Also found that the system was infected with the GenericFakeAlert virus as detected by McAfee anti-virus. Why the anti-virus did not detect it in the first place is a mystery. I disabled the System Restore in Windows and run Malware Byte's scanner. It fixed a number of spyware problems including detecting the winlogon.exe file as a bad file. Apparently the file should be located in C:\Windows\system32 directory. I copied the file from C:\Windows into the system32 before allowing Malware Byte to remove the detected files and then rebooted the system. The system seems to be running ok now.

How much is your time?

How much is your time? Where do you spend most of your time? How much time do you spend with your family?

Read the following article was lifted from Pastor Danny Liuson's Multiply site. Though the plot maybe different, the theme of the story is very much like that of "Click", a movie with Adam Sandler.

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.
SON: "Daddy, may I ask you a question?"
DAD: "Yeah sure, what it is?" replied the man.
SON: "Daddy, how much do you make an hour?"
DAD: "That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?" the man said angrily.
SON: "I just want to know.. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?"
DAD: "If you must know, I make PHP 895.74 an hour."
SON: "Oh," the little boy replied, with his head down.
SON: "Daddy, may I please borrow PHP 447.87 ?"

The father was furious, "If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such this childish behavior."

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.
The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that PHP 447.87 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

"Are you asleep, son?" He asked.
"No daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.
"I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier" said the man. "It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the PHP 447.87 you asked for."
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. "Oh, thank you daddy!" He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.

"Why do you want more money if you already have some?" the father grumbled. "Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied. "Daddy, I have PHP 895.74 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you."

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.

It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that PHP 895.74 worth of your time with someone you love. If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family & friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than to our family.

PLS READ WITH FAITH.. This is an awesome prayer.
Believe it and you shall be blessed.

The problem with many of us is that we don't believe that God will open a Window and pour out blessings that we won't have room to receive them. I Dare anyone to try God. He is true to His word. God cannot lie and His Promises are sure.

Three things will happen to you this coming week:
(1) You will find favor with someone you don't expect;
(2) You will be too relevant to be ignored;
(3) You will encounter God and you will never remain the same again.

My prayer for you today:
The eyes beholding this message shall not behold evil, the hands that will Send this message to others shall not labor in vain, the mouth saying Amen To this prayer shall laugh forever . Remain in God's love as you send this Prayer to everybody on your list. Have a lovely journey of life! Trust In the Lord with all your heart and He will never fail you because He is AWESOME! If you truly need a blessing, continue reading this email:

Heavenly Father, most Gracious and Loving God, I pray to you that you Abundantly bless my family and me. I know that you recognize, that a Family is more than just a mother, father, sister, brother, husband and wife, but all who believe and trust in you.
